Start beyond the first step
If your stair foot opens into a hall, mark nearby doors and the path people use to move through the house. Ask the surveyor to show the rail end and parked chair on the same drawing. A base-unit price does not tell you how that space will work.
Ask what a folding section changes
A seller may propose a folding rail where an extension would obstruct passage. Compare manual and powered operation, who uses the feature and any maintenance responsibilities. Do not assume an accessory is included because it appears in a brochure.
Compare access in three positions
Review the chair in use, folded and parked. Ask the assessor to demonstrate the proposed getting-on and getting-off positions for the intended user. If two sellers specify different rail ends, resolve that layout difference before comparing their totals.
Keep the proposal comparable
- Exact equipment and a measured rail layout.
- Preparation, installation, demonstration and written terms.
- Servicing at the actual address, parts and removal responsibilities.
